Oral Contraception
Contraceptive pills contain specific female hormones that prevent pregnancy.
There are two main types of these tablets:
- Combined Oral Contraceptive Pill (COC), commonly known as "the pill." It includes two hormones: progesterone and estrogen. This effective contraceptive works in three ways:
- It prevents the release of an egg.
- It makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.
- It thins the uterine lining, reducing the likelihood of egg implantation.
Typically, you take one pill daily for three weeks, followed by a one-week break during which you have your monthly period.
- Progesterone-Only Pill (POP), also known as the "mini-pill." This option contains only progesterone and works in two ways:
- It prevents the release of an egg.
- It makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus.
When using a mini-pill, you take one tablet each day without any breaks.
