Mysimba

What is Mysimba?

Mysimba is a prescription weight loss tablet that combines two active ingredients — naltrexone and bupropion — which work on the brain’s hunger and reward centres. It helps to reduce your appetite, control cravings, and make it easier to stick to a lower-calorie diet. When combined with healthy eating and exercise, Mysimba can support meaningful weight loss.

How to Use Mysimba

  • ➤ Take Mysimba exactly as prescribed, with or after food.
  • ➤ Swallow the tablets whole with water — do not crush, chew, or split them.
  • ➤ Usually taken once or twice daily, gradually increasing to a maximum of four tablets per day.
  • ➤ Try to take your doses at the same times each day.

Who is Mysimba Suitable For?

Mysimba is for adults aged 18–84 who:

  • ➤ Have a BMI of 30 or above
  • ➤ Have a BMI of 27 or above with a weight-related condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol

Mysimba is not suitable if you:

  • ➤ Have uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • ➤ Have a seizure disorder, bipolar disorder, or an eating disorder
  • ➤ Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • ➤ Are taking certain medications (your prescriber will check for interactions)

Mysimba Dose Guide

To reduce the risk of side effects, the dose of Mysimba is increased gradually over the first four weeks:

  • ➤ Week 1: 1 tablet in the morning, none in the evening
  • ➤ Week 2: 1 tablet in the morning, 1 tablet in the evening
  • ➤ Week 3: 2 tablets in the morning, 1 tablet in the evening
  • ➤ Week 4 and onwards: 2 tablets in the morning, 2 tablets in the evening (maximum dose)

➤ Do not take more than 4 tablets per day.

How Effective is it?

  • ➤ When used alongside diet and exercise, Mysimba can help patients lose around 5–10% of their body weight over 6–12 months.
  • ➤ Some people may lose more, while others lose less.
  • ➤ Regular follow-up with your prescriber is important to monitor your progress and adjust treatment if needed.

Increasing the Dose

➤ The dose should only be increased following the gradual schedule prescribed by your healthcare provider.

➤ Do not increase the dose more quickly or take more than prescribed, as this can increase the risk of side effects and complications.

Potential Side Effects

Like all medicines, Mysimba can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. These are usually mild and improve as your body adjusts.

Common side effects include:

  • ➤ Nausea or vomiting
  • ➤ Headache
  • ➤ Dry mouth
  • ➤ Insomnia or difficulty sleeping
  • ➤ Dizziness
  • ➤ Anxiety or feeling jittery
  • ➤ Constipation

Uncommon but serious side effects:

  • ➤ Increased blood pressure or heart rate
  • ➤ Seizures (rare — stop treatment and seek medical advice immediately if you have a seizure)
  • ➤ Severe allergic reactions
